The patterns behind the world’s most valuable companies
Unicorns are no longer rare. Over the past decade, the number of billion-dollar startups has surged. But the question remains: what sets the founders behind these category-defining apart?
In The Anatomy of Greatness, Antler analysed 1,629 unicorns and 3,512 founders globally to uncover the patterns shaping the world’s most valuable companies.
A few signals stand out:
- Speed matters more than ever. While most startups still take 6–7 years to reach unicorn status, AI companies are doing it in under five.
- Founders are getting younger in AI. The average age of AI-unicorn founders has fallen sharply, as a new generation builds earlier and faster.
- Great companies can come from anywhere. Unicorns are now spread across 300+ cities in 45 countries. It’s no longer just a Silicon Valley story.
- The market still under-backs women. Despite progress, women represent just 6% of unicorn founders.
- Experience still matters, but not how you might expect. Around 40% of unicorn founders are repeat entrepreneurs, and a quarter are immigrants building companies outside their country of origin.
