Europe's Two-Tier Funding Reality Has Arrived
There has never been a better time to be a founder in Europe. There has never been a harder time to be a founder in Europe.
Our research reveals the emergence of a stark, two-tier funding ecosystem across the continent. At one extreme, a new generation of European rocketship unicorns is scaling faster, raising larger rounds, and reaching decacorn status at unprecedented speed. At the other extreme, early-stage funding is experiencing a severe contraction, creating a massive pipeline bottleneck that threatens to choke off the next generation of outlier founders.
While political efforts and venture capital have historically focused on solving Europe's growth-stage funding gap, our data shows we are ignoring a far bigger issue: an emerging early-stage funding crisis
The Rise of Rocketships: Jets & Juggernauts
Europe has produced 33 rocketship unicorns - companies founded since 2020 that have already reached unicorn valuations. Pre-2020, European startups took an average of 7.2 years to reach a $1B valuation; today's rocketships reach that milestone in just 2 years.
Our analysis shows these rocketships divide into two distinct categories:
- Jets: Lean, capital-efficient, AI-driven software companies (such as Lovable and Legora) with young, technical founders (average starting age 31) who rapidly scale revenue.
- Juggernauts: Capital-intensive, deep-tech infrastructure companies building in defense, energy, and frontier AI (such as AMI Labs, Ineffable Intelligence, and Fuse Energy). These are led by older, highly academic founders (average starting age 37; 38.5% PhDs) who raise record-breaking Seed and Series A rounds.
